Members of the Morrisburg Curling Club, especially the seniors were saddened to hear of the passing of Raymond Benoit. Ray loved curling and loved being around people at the club. He will be sadly missed by all, and our condolences go out to his wife Sandra and the family. His son wrote a moving tribute to Ray, his serious health problems, and his long, loving marriage to Sandra. All who knew Ray mourn his passing.

Recently, Morrisburg entered a team in Prescott’s annual ladies bonspiel. Alice Thompson, Betty Locke, Kelly Friedrich and Cindy Paice curled in the late draw. Those in the early games were slow in their matches and by the time our ladies started their match, their eight-end game would have them extra late for their lunch. There again, though, the Cornwall foursome took a long time discussing shots, so our folks were famished by the time their game was over, and lost in the bargain. In their second game, a six-ender, they defeated Huntley, but it was ten minutes to six when they got off the ice. The Prescott hosts provided delicious desserts, and our ladies received attractive prizes before cruising home to concerned families. Betty Locke was the exception. Her husband Deputy Mayor Jim came to the club to pick up his wife, managed to devour some cake, and then took her out for supper.

By the way, the overall champions on the day were the Granite foursome from Ottawa, with the Kingston quartet taking second place.

This week Morrisburg visited Prescott for a friendly bonspiel. Keith Robinson, Neil Williams, Larry Ware and Chuck Irvine, Andy Patenaude, Dave King, Fred Langlotz and Gord Empey, as well as Jack Barkley, Ron Beaupre, Ron Brinston and Gerry Thompson were the teams of record. Jack’s team was only “friendly” one, losing 6-5. Keith’s and Andy’s foursomes trounced the hosts, enjoyed their lunch, and then headed home to Morrisburg.

Last Friday two teams of our senior men were in Cornwall for the MacLennan Cup,  and we’ll have the results next time.
