These last 2 weeks saw a flurry of activity at and around the  Morrisburg Curling Club. On January 18th Morrisburg sent 2 teams to Prescott to compete for the 3rd leg of the Parnell Cup. Don McMillan, Maurice Kolff, Al Harriman and Mike Horton won both their matches and consequently the Parnell Cup. The next leg will be played in Lancaster with the McMillan team representing Morrisburg. The 2nd team of Jack Barkley, Dave King, Doug Jarvis and Rick McKenzie lost their first match to Lancaster then tied their 2nd game against Cornwall.

January 19th was a very busy day at the Morrisburg Curling Club. We held a Bantam and Little Rock bonspiel. 6 Bantam and 6 Little Rock teams competed for the Beavers Dental and Ball family trophys.  In the Bantam division Morrisburg’s Erin Gibbons, Alexis Grenkie, Keltey McCooeye and Hannah Gibbons first played a team from Winchester who eventually went on to win the Bonspiel then defeated a team from North Grenville giving them a 1 and 1 record but putting them 1 position out of the metals.

In Little Rock action we iced 2 teams. Morrisburg 1; Julia Cooper, Taelor Jones Miner, Madilyn(Maddy) Fraser and Amelia(Mia) Jones Miner played host first to Winchester 2, who triumphed over them in a draw to the button after being tied in regulation play, but then regrouped to defeat North Grenville thus finishing in 2nd  place. Morrisburg 2; William Gibbons, Trevor Backes, Peyton Caron and Michael Millward/Raine Wells defeated Prescott in the morning draw then lost in the last shot of the game to the overall winners, Winchester1.

All 3 Morrisburg teams played extremely well. The crowd support was awesome. We have never seen so many fans at the local club. A great day for all. A special thanks to Tayrn Cooper for providing help and guidance with the Little Rocks group and Bill Laurin for his expertise with a camera. We will definitely run at least 1, if not 2 bonspiels next year.

That same day, the Morrisburg Ladies played in Metcalfe for the Broder Cup. The first team consisted of Greta McGann, Kathy Killick, Lila Lapier, & Susan Parkes, who won their morning game, but lost in the afternoon, putting them out of the playoffs. The 2nd Team of Susan McIntosh/Joan MacKinnon, Claire Locke, Cindy Paice, and Sandra Bonyun, played well but came up short in both our games.

The ‘A’ event was won by the Winchester Curling Club who stole a point in both the seventh and eighth end to hold off Jennifer Harvey’s Russell-based foursome. The game was tied after the sixth end, but the Janet Levere squad, which also features vice Janet Lapierre, second Wendy Casselman and lead Carol Doornawaard, used the two point steal to capture the 70th annual Broder Cup 8-6. Metcalfe won the B.

On Friday January 25th,  3 men’s teams from Morrisburg played a friendly in Brockville. We had a win, a loss and a tie. Mahlon Locke, Dave King, Doug Jarvis and Keith Barkley won their game; Maurice Kolff, Arnold Barkley, Paul Gunther and Charlie Farlinger had a tough game and consequently went down to defeat and Sam Locke, Johnny Gove, Terry Davis and Les Craig tied their opponent. Friendly indeed.

Saturday January 26th saw the annual Hospice Bonspiel return to the Morrisburg Curling Club. 2/6 end draws. The 1st draw was won by Dave King, Scott Robinson, Marc St Pierre and Jim Tuttle. The 2nd draw saw the Inglesliders finish in 1st place; Pete Zeran, Larry Ware, Johnny Gove and Earle Jeacle. A great day with the proceeds going to the South Dundas and Cornwall Hospice. Thank you to Linda Robinson, Jack Barkley and the Morrisburg Lions Club.
