We had a team of ladies curling in a two-day bonspiel in Ottawa last week. The event was the Molly McGuire Centennial, and thirty teams from Ottawa and the district competed at several clubs in Ottawa. Gretta McGann, Joan McKinnon, Linda Murphy and Penny Charlebois represented our club in the two-day bonspiel.

In their first game at Navy, Grettaā€™s foursome lost to a team from the R.A. Centre. Then they moved over to the Cityview club, where they had better luck, defeating a foursome from Carleton Heights. On the second day, the Morrisburg contingent faced another team from the R. A. Centre at the Granite club. Here they dropped the match, eliminating them from further play. Well done anyway, ladies! Oh, by the way, they stopped off for a bite after their elimination. It was a diner in the neighbourhood that had been recommended to them. Unfortunately, the food left much to be desired, and thereā€™s even a suggestion of food poisoning. Our skip, being a quiet person, was reluctant to complain. Do you suppose the team that had defeated them recommended the spot?

Susan McIntosh had her first two-person ā€˜spiel of the season on Sunday. Her husband Dave made the chilli, which was delicious. Scores in the early matches determined whether a team competed in the ā€˜Aā€™, ā€˜Bā€™ or ā€˜Cā€™ final. In the ā€˜Cā€™ finale, Bonnie and Dave Van Moorsel broke a tie game to defeate Keith Robinson and Fred Langlotz. The ā€˜Bā€™ final saw Rick Mckenzie and Dave King edge Peter Zeran and Earl Jeacle. Finally, in ā€˜Aā€™, Gretta McGann and Linda Murphy dropped the first 3 ends to Kathy Killick and Penny Charlebois, but won the next 3 to take the title. After the winners in each division got their prize money, there was still $255 profit for the club. The group is suggesting new blinds for the kitchen or grippers and sliders for MCC. It was another very successful day.

In news of future events, Glenn Couglerā€™s stick bonspiel here is set for Wednesday, November 18. Also, the Gamble, with two mixed teams required, is set for Nov. 21. Weā€™ll have several results to report on next time.

The first Parnell this year will be in Morrisburg on Nov. 27. Three teams will have to play off for the single opening. The teams are skipped by Pete Zeran, Dave King and Sid Morrell.

For those interested in entering bonspiels, why not try ā€œA Frosty Bonspielā€ here on Saturday, November 28? The cost is $100 for a team and the contact is Sherry Davis, the coordinator for the United Way, at 613-932-2051. Lunch is included, and there are two 6-end games. Thereā€™s also a silent auction, there are door prizes and a vintage jewellery sale. We already have one local team entered. This bonspiel is open to men, women, or both, and while you donā€™t need to buy anything at the jewellery sale, you could.

Finally, our board of directors includes President Mahlon Locke, House Chair Maurice Kolff, Secretary Joanne Baker, Treasurer Paula Locke, House Chair Jack Barkley, Ice Chair/Sponsorship Ron Beaupre, Finance John Allison, Ice Technician Wally Baker, and Webmaster Rick Mackenzie. Thanks to all of these hard-working members.

Thatā€™s it for now. Good curling to all!
