Over the holidays Wally Baker, our ice technician, flooded the ice and prepared for rentals. Curling resumed last Tuesday. The Thursday morning curlers finished their first draw, and we have the victorious teams. They are Maurice Kolff, Keith Robinson, Penny Charlebois and Mike Legault, with the 2nd and 3rd teams tied. Those are Wally Baker, Bill Magee, Claire Locke and Terry Davis, and Peter Zeran, Arnold Barkley, Linda Murphy and Mike Horton. A really competitive draw!
Three of our senior men’s teams are playing off for the right to compete in the next Parnell competition in Cornwall on Friday. We’ll have the results next week. Also Prescott will be here for a friendly match. We’ll have teams 1, 5 and 6 to host them.
Our senior men look forward to the second Parnell competition, to be held in Cornwall on Friday, January 5th. Although they did not win the one they hosted this month, they wanted to thank Wally Baker, who provided fine ice for the competition, and Bud Perry, Keith Robinson and Sid Morrell for their invaluable efforts in the success of the event. In addition, they appreciated the workers in the kitchen, the bar, and sandwich and dessert donations. Also, best wishes for the speedy recovery of Lynn Loucks.
Kathy Norg took her team, Joan McKinnon, Kathy Killick and Penny Charlebois, to the Ladies Curling Association competition in Ottawa, winning her first match with the top score. Although the folks lost their second game, their total score was high enough to have them finish just out of the money, behind foursomes from Russell, Cornwall and Navy. Well done, ladies.
Alice Thompson, Joan MacKinnon, Linda Murphy and Nelda Hickman were to be in    Alexandria last Wednesday for their bonspiel, but with bad weather and the closing of Highway 401, the organizer had to cancel her bonspiel. Our folks hope to play in Alexandria’s bonspiel next year.
On Thursday, Alice Thompson, Janie Connolly, Joanne Baker and Nelda Hickman travelled to Winchester for their Grandmothers’ Bonspiel. Also in the bonspiel from Morrisburg were Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, and Paula and Claire Locke.     Unfortunately both Morrisburg teams were in the early bonspiel, and to further cast a pall on the morning, the organizers had them play each other. Susan had a very strong team and won that meeting. They also won their second match after lunch, and placed second behind a team from Ottawa’s R.A. Centre, the overall champions. The curlers enjoyed soup, sandwiches and dessert at lunchtime, and a very tasty evening meal, with wine and desserts provided. Such stats as the oldest grandmother, who was a lady in her nineties, and the grandmother with the youngest grandchild, were enjoyed and applauded. Eventually the ladies wended their way home, with another Grandmothers’ bonspiel history, but visions of the event happy memories for them all.
